Group work to determine the ionic basis of action potentials
Rationale: This short lesson involves minimal lecturing on my part, but instead asks students to use what they already know about diffusion and permeability to figure out the ionic basis of the action potential on their own- with guidance from me. Thus, this lesson involves formative assessment, group discussion to engage students in active learning, and it asks for them to integrate information that they already know from earlier classes- most students understand diffusion and permeability changes, they just may not know when to apply it, and that's where I come in as the instructor. My notes/script are included so you can understand how the class session was carried out.
